Symbol for Windows Shuffle
Symbol for Windows Shuffle is a game in which the player should bring a symbol, photo or image
back into its original state, after it has been divided in a number of square pieces and shuffled.
When the player succeeds, the empty square (at the bottom right) will be filled so
that the whole image becomes visible. At the same time a sound can be played.
Shuffle can be operated with switches (scanning), or with mouse and keyboard.
Scan users can not change settings but they can play, open and close saved games.
Settings
The number of rows and columns can be chosen, as well as the degree to which
the image is put into disorder. This way the game can be made a little easier, allthough of course it remains a thinking game.
The background colour of the 'empty' square can be changed as well.
The square will show a smiley at first, but you can also omit the image or choose one
of the others (for instance a circle or a checkmark).
Numbers can be displayed on the pieces: a great help to find the solution when several pieces are exactly the same.
When you save a game, the image as well as the settings will be saved.
Symbol for Windows Multiple Choice
Symbol for Windows Multiple Choice is a program to make and play multiple choice exercises for mentally handicapped people.
On the screen you see one big box (the 'question') and up to five smaller reply boxes. You can fill each box with one symbol, image,
photo or word. Together the boxes form a multiple choice question, for instance:
- An everyday object; at the bottom a row of different rooms in the house... Where does this object belong?
- A detail of a photo. Each reply box contains a different photo... Which was the detail taken from?
- A photo or image of an animal. In the reply boxes you see different things... What does this animal eat?
Audiovisual feedback
The player can point out one reply box at a time. If the answer is correct, the next question appears on screen. If the answer is wrong, the chosen box disappears and the player may try again.
Earlier or later, the player will find the correct answer. There is no time pressure, no stress. The player is stimulated by audiovisul feedback after every answer - whether the answer is
correct or not - and at the end of the exercise. The player will learn to enjoy working with the computer!
Educational software
Multiple Choice can also be used as educational software, by adding new concepts and new symbols when the player
is ready for it. It is easy to make (and change)
exercises: as soon as you have figured out what the exercise should be about, you can start to fill the boxes.
Symbol for Windows Memory
Symbol for Windows Memory is a game for symbol language users. The cards in this
Memory game don't show just ordinary pictures, but symbols from one or two symbol (or photo) databases.
It can be played by one or two players. They can operate the game with one or two switches.
To change the settings, the help of a speech therapist, family member, friend or teacher is needed.
Thematic games
It is very easy to compose thematic games, by selecting concepts from one category.
When a game is based on two databases, only those concepts show which are available in both databases.
The settings of each game can be saved, so the work doesn't have to be done twice.
Different levels
When the game is too difficult or too easy, you can simply lower or raise the number of cards. You can also allow cribbing: when choosing the first card, the player may turn the card back again.
A game that is played with two databases is more difficult, because pictures from different databases may represent the same concept, but they never look the same. To help the player a little, all cards belonging to one database can be given a specific color.
