Modemo Ltd is a small, internationally oriented company established in South Wales having also small but highly skilled international support team. Company originate from Finland where managing director started working with AAC in 1993 and imported many of the best-known AAC products, did assesments as part of the clinical teams and built user vocabularies to all user groups who benefited from dynamic display systems. Our main interest is in AAC software and support material development based on an ongoing research and evaluation work in the field. We believe in inclusion and extensive research work of academic quality together with hands-on evaluation and have therefore been involved in various development projects in the AAC field during the years like WWAAC.
We also believe that standardisation of the software products using ideas like Concept Coding Framework (CCF) would make a substantial difference to the life of the AAC users and are therefore constantly interested in co-operation with all AAC manufacturers. That could mean e.g. developing methods for more standardised user vocabulary structures. We use a communication software Assistant as a platform for new ideas. The software works in Windows environment and can therefore be installed on standard PC and many communication aids as well. Assistant has been available since 1998 and because of its innovative design has proved to be both reliable and flexible tool for Dynamic Display Communication users. Assistant supports a large collection of different symbol and picture libraries (e.g. PCS, Bliss, Picto and Picture This) and a search system based on concepts. While Assistant offers unique functions like cascaded pages and also supports Windows multimedia standards for graphics, video, recorded voice and synthetic speech it is the right tool either when you need to introduce the idea of communication software to users or when individual user vocabularies need to be built and maintained.
