Modemo is an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) services and Assistive Technology software provider based in South Wales, with a highly skilled international support team. Originating in Finland, Modemo began working with AAC in 1993 and is recognised for the provision and support of many of the best-known AAC products as well as for the provision of clinical team assessments with the aim of building user vocabularies to all user groups who would benefit from dynamic display systems.
Our main interest is in AAC software and support material development which is based around ongoing research and evaluation work in the field. We believe in inclusion and have been involved in extensive research work combined with hands-on evaluation over the past 15 years. As a result, we have been involved in various development projects in the AAC field such as the World-Wide Augmentative and Alternative Communication project (WWAAC).
We also believe that the standardisation of AAC software products, using an idea such as the Concept Coding Framework (CCF) would make a substantial difference to the life of the AAC users. We are therefore keen to cooperate and develop ideas with AAC manufacturers on ways in which to standardise user vocabulary structures.
Gold is the biggest upgrade from the Dutch software developer Handicom since the company released Symbol for Windows over ten years ago. Modemo's first delivery in the UK was made to the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), where Symbol for Windows Chart Maker licenses were provided to aid the delivery of the Speech and Language Therapy teaching programme and evaluation work; the only course of its kind in Wales.
